(P-BC-59) The Development and Validation of a Self-reinforcement Scale for Repeated Blood Donation

Background/Case Studies: Despite the availability of reinforcement scale for other health behavior (e.g., smoking), no such a measure of blood donation is attainable in previous research. The current study aimed to develop and validate a self-reinforcement scale for repeated blood donation (SRS-RBD).

Study

Design/Methods: In Study 1, six items were created for SRS-RBD, and the factor structure of SRS-RBD were explored among 155 Chinese student blood donors (100 females, 55 males; Mage = 20.23 ± 1.94). Another sample of 164 donors (79 female, 85 males; Mage = 25.68 ± 7.87) were recruited from blood collection sites in Study 2 to validate the SRS-RBD. In Study 3, a total of 850 blood donors (390 female, 460 males; Mage = 25.29 ± 7.16) were recruited by short messages and invited to participate in an online-survey measuring SRS-RBD and re-donation intention at baseline, and their re-donation behavior was captured by checking the donation record from the database of Blood Center in Zhejiang Province 6 months later.

Results/Findings: A two-factor structure of SRS-RBD was established through the exploratory factor analysis in Study 1 and further validated in Study 2 and Study 3. The SRS-RBD demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity (see Table 1). A cut-off score of 20 was suggested as having the best performance to identify donors who had an intention to re-donate. Independent Sample T-test and Pearson Chi-square test revealed that re-donation intention (M± SD: 4.72± 0.55 vs 4.19± 0.88, p < .001) and the prevalence of re-donation behavior at 6-month follow up (26.1% vs 19.9%, p < .05) was significantly higher among donors with higher score of SRS-RBD (20 or above) than that with lower score (lower than 20).

Conclusions:

The SRS-RBD can be considered reliable in measuring the self-reinforcement of re-donation among blood donors. The scale may be useful tool in blood donation practice and research programs.
