Session Desription: Many hospitals have administrative and clinical elements for Mass Casualty Events (MCE) but often do not include how to determine the number of blood products that will be needed and rarely how the products will be distributed or tracked. Due to the multiple regulatory concerns in the Transfusion Service, ensuring final disposition for each blood product in a chaotic situation is a major concern. These regulatory concerns have to be balanced with the need to get blood products to the patient quickly and efficiently. This program will look into how to determine how many blood products might be needed in an MCE. We will also share an example of a process to quickly prepare blood products with paper tracking and downtime administration for distribution during MCE.

Discuss what type of products are immediately available for Mass Casualty Event (MCE) and how these can be used to start the MCE process.
Discuss information regarding how many blood products are routinely used during a MCE and how to calculate an estimate of blood products that might be needed.
Share an example of a paper tracking form that might be used for MCE to quickly release blood products to a patient.
Determine how to implement a blood product distribution program for MCE at a hospital site that meets the urgent demand as well as the regulatory tracking requirements.
