Among 8,247 hospitalizations of 7,227 plasma or platelet transfusion recipients with linked donor SARS-CoV-2 antibody data, there were 271 post-transfusion thrombotic events, and oxygen requirements were increased after transfusion in 742 hospitalizations. Among 13,429 transfused plasma units, 4,133 and 893 were from vaccinated donors and previously infected donors, respectively. Among 17,814 transfused platelet units, 7,595 and 1,129 were from vaccinated and previously infected donors, respectively. There were no associations of thrombosis or increased oxygen requirements with plasma or platelet transfusions from vaccinated or previously infected donors (Table 1). Nor were the odds of adverse outcomes increased when examining transfusion of first plasma or platelet donations following donor SARS-CoV-2 vaccination or infection.
Conclusions: Transfusion of plasma and platelet blood components from blood donors with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination was not associated with increased adverse outcomes in transfusion recipients without COVID-19.
