Session Desription: Like cardiopulmonary codes, activations of massive transfusion protocols (MTP) are inherently emergent, involve disparate people and disciplines, are rare, and directly and swiftly contribute to patient survival, morbidity, or mortality. Unlike cardiopulmonary codes, hospitals rarely simulate MTPs routinely. Simulation science is a distinct area of medicine that has evolved quickly in recent years with new technology and resources. We will review aspects of simulation science that are applicable to labs, blood banks and transfusion services, strengths and weaknesses of different types of simulations, and gather audience ideas so that a program of any size can return home with ideas on how to instate simulations locally in order to improve patient and lab outcomes.
